Chapter Six

Zedris laid motionless in the darkened room, listening to the voices of the doctor as he departed and to the guards outside the door. Although he was quite satisfied with his performance, he was becoming restless just laying there, wanting desperately to stretch his legs and move around. He actually contemplated standing for a minute before deciding that it was not worth the risk. There was no chance that he was going to let this all fall apart after he had worked so hard to get this far. He was almost there. He smiled slightly, admiring himself for doing so well. It had occoured to him that he had never seen the Lena’s face, so he focused on that. Perhaps she looked something like her father, dark skinned and gray eyed. He hoped not.

His thoughts were inturrupted after a few moments though by the sound of footsteps, stopping directly before his doors. A womans voice said with authority “I wish to see this person, let me pass.” Obviously one of the guards has indeed stayed behind to watch the door. He could tell that the voice belonged to the Lena that he had yet to see. ‘This could prove to be interesting’ he thought to himself as he again made himself motionless and silent to clearly hear the words being spoken. He heard the guard clear his throat and stutter for a moment. “I’m sorry m’lady. I…I was told to let no one pass.” He heard the girl laugh slightly, as if her had amused her by his refusal of her wishes. “No, my father said to let no guest pass, I expect that you realize that I am not nearly what you would call a guest, so I shall pass and you will say no more about this. Just leave. Now if you wish to keep a claim on your position.”

‘What kind of woman is with with such authority in her tone’ he wondered and he held his breath and waited for the outcome. The servent obviously didn’t have the will to compete with her and he mumbled “right away m’lady” and made his timely exit, moving to the smallest of the three kitchens, likely to drown his wits and pride before the ultimate letting go he would find on the following morning. Zedris closed his eyes again as he heard the door softly creak open. He hated having to rely only on his senses, not being able to see the face of the girl he so badly wanted to, especially if he was to seduce and marry her. It made no real difference though, the darkness prevented little more then shadowy outlines. He could feel her prescence to his left by the head of the large wooden bed. He could picture her faceless image staring doen at him, wondering who he could possibly be.  Just one look into the shadows of her face would have been enough for him. One look into the eyes that for him still remained colourless, an image of his imagination.

He felt her walk away only to return with a chair of some sort to sit beside him. There was complete silence throughout the room for the next several minutes as they secretly contemplated eachothers situations. He could hear her slow and even breathing as she looked down to his face and brought the blanket at his chest up to hide his chin.

“Who are you?” he heard her speak softly, her voice barely a small whisper. His breath caught in the hollowness of his throat as he felt her fingers lightly brush the hair from his eyes, an unexpected intimate gesture. “This is my chance then” he mused.

He moved slightly to feign a slow and uneasy awakening, feeling he pull her hand lightly away from him, and letting it come to rest on the edge of the uncomfortable bed. He yawned silently and moved his arm, brushing her fingers with his elbow before opening his eyes half way, blinking twice. It was only then that he allowed himself to gaze at her face, wide eyed at his unexpected rising.
