It used to be so simple.
You used to play all day.
Before you knew what those things were,
What those words meant,
They told you they were defective.
What a thing for a little girl
to know and see
lying in a hospital bed.
They sent you on your way
Telling you there would be pain in this life
And crosses which you must bear.
Over time it became okay.
You learned to function and hide the scars.
You fell in love one day, sweet girl.
You thought it was meant to be.
So you put on the collar,
And wore his ring.
Forgave his anger,
And his abuse,
Walked beside him,
Tried to to be "normal"
For him.
Until you began to die each day,
Until he turned his anger onto you.
And told you as you walked out
Here's a few more scars
And another cross to bear.
But it got better, sweet child.
You grew and learned,
Made new friends,
Let go of him and his world.
Then just as happiness was yours...
A split second
and someone else's mistake.
You're waking up in the hospital again.
Broken and destroyed.
Here's another cross to bear, my girl.
Learn to love plastic and metal
They are a part of you now.
Hard to get over.
Never quite got there.
But you fell in love again
At school.
It felt so perfect and so right.
He was to be the one.
Love, pure love
Is what you gave to him.
Wasn't it nice
When he felt it too?
But alas
He had his own crosses
Which caused him to go.
He walked out the door
And told you not to cry
But he just didn't love you
anymore.
"You're too messed up,"
He told you.
Another cross to bear.
Then came the men telling
You of your great worth.
Telling you how pretty,
Wonderful, intelligent you were.
Holding you
Long enough to possess you in
The only way they wished to.
Making you believe that you
Were the perfect woman.
Perfect.
No crosses to bear.
Perfect.
But you came to your senses
As I knew you would.
Cast those boys aside
Giving them a cross to bear
And accepting yours as well.
Then today as the X-rays
Were taken and the blood rose to
The surface for all to see
You realized the truth.
Though the outside is nice
and neat
Though some will love you
And think you complete
Your inside is messed up
Your burdens will give them scare
And as the doctor speaks and as they leave you
Hear my words echo
Here's another cross to bear...
