we try to run,
foolishly again and again
only to get lost in the dark corners.
twisting and turning, hating the way it feels
all our control stolen away
visibly shrinking, changing what we thought
we try to forget
stupidly wandering away from the memories.
if anyone asks, we retreat into ignorance.
but always, always it's there
sticking to the walls, the mirror, the pillow
stealing our breath at unexpected times
we try to avoid the sun
desperately closing the curtains, shutting it out.
its rays are stubborn, relentless
they pierce right through our armor, so carefully crafted
we don't notice the cracks until too late.
the tears fall, and maybe, just maybe we think.
in the end, we find the effort doomed,
the running and fighting and hiding.
let it inside, our hearts whisper, give it a chance.
we open the door and wrap it up, close and tight, vowing
to never blind ourselves again.
it sits in our eyes, gazing at the precious few.
