“The beginning of Time” by Monica A. Mattei and Juan Islas

Billions of years ago, the divine council ruled over every star, every spectacle and every

planet in the universe. It was theirs to decide what to do with it, for they held the ultimate

power, to create life. But time it took for them to realize, that this power was within their

hands.

One day, the council had gathered to discuss a new discovery, music. When the gods

gathered in a circle, Amus, one of the gods, started to sing, switching from high notes to

low notes and with the music his arms danced around him.

The gods observed and saw how with the sounds and the movements, Amus was starting

to create living things from the tip of his hands. With this new revelation, the gods started

to sing along with Amus and in a matter of time they created the earth.

As time flew by for the gods, Earth became filled with creatures with different sizes and

shapes. Some of the could fly in the air, some of them could swim in deep streams, and

other could walk and run among the green grass. But after some years, this creates drifted

apart, as some of the gods had become bored since they didn't found anything else

interesting enough to create. It was then when shadows and darkness filled the earth,

turning creatures against each other.

But the gods soon remembered their creations. With great consternation and sadness

looked upon the earth and began singing again. High notes and low notes, all over again.

But this time was different. As darkness and shadows became so attached in the world,

the music didn’t flow the way as in the beginning.

And then the human emerged. The result of the combination of music and shadows,

beauty and darkness, the new creation of the council began roaming the Earth. At first

humans were clumsy, distracted, like if they didn’t knew what to do. Then they began

working with each other, creating villages and families, government and games. But

something was missing.

One day, Antic, the old human, was sitting in a tall and distant mountain. Wondering about

what was the emptiness he and his brothers and sisters felt since birth, he asked the gods:

“Oh, wise gods, what is that my people is missing? With all we have, with all you have

given us to live and thrive, why do we feel this hole in our hearts? Then, Amus answered:

“Oh my child, you are the result of something special, something you still don’t know, but

you shall know” And he sang to Antic. And Antic sang to his people. And that is how

humans discovered music.
