First Date

So many months and so many feelings

Why did it take so long for our first date?

I had been there hundreds of times

My stomach filled with butterflies all the same

How could seven days have pulled us so far apart?

It felt like an eternity since I saw you last

As you opened the door

Memories of that first day we met

Once again my breath taken away

Your smile brought such warmth

I could barely speak

My eyes never stopped sparkling for you

And tonight brought joyful tears

Awkward silence filled our travels

Like two kids and youthful nervousness

Glancing over at your pretty browns

Awestruck by your never-ending beauty

Arriving at a long overdue designation

We laughed and shared good times again

All the things I ever wanted were back

My baby by my side once again

Playful pictures taken when off guard

A golden span’s glow that showered your face

Like a little girl in a candy store

We toured the places from my youth

I never stopped loving you

But to tell you wouldn’t be right

The fog teased an overlook

The city skyline and a shared embrace

“Will you ever kiss me?”

Words I thought I’d never hear

Just like our first, time stood still

A long drive home and simple pastries

An exhausting chapter brought to a close

We were together again

As it was meant to be

Nothing can keep us apart

As you began to doze, I gazed upon you

Your worries gone

A peaceful angel once again

No more longing at the end of the day

I’ll always be there to say I love you

I will miss you at every moment apart

No more thoughts of first dates

No more games

Just love, trust and respect

Until we meet again
