Whether it is at breakfast, lunch, dinner, a family reunion or a wedding, my grandfather is always sketching. He is an architect and he has always been in love with his profession. He even created a studio at the back of his old house so he could go and relieve some stress, get inspired, put his ideas into paper or just to have some peace and tranquility. That studio is a rental room now, but I can remember perfectly being a kid and going with my grandfather to this studio and watching him for hours. He sat at this big wooden desk and opened his big yellow sketch notebook and then he turned on some opera music in his big old radio. He opened his drawers and started taking out pencils, pens, big erasers, colored pencils, rulers, and other tools he used to make his sketches perfect. He loved when I went there with him. He always had a refrigerator full of sodas and food that I liked so I felt comfortable there. I always wanted to do what he did so he added a small chair and a small desk to his studio so I could sit there and draw too; he bought me a small notebook and a small box of colored pencils and we went there and spent hours drawing. I remember showing him my drawings and him always telling me how amazing they were even though I know they were pretty bad. Not only did he sketch in his notebook in this old studio, he always, and still to this day sketches on napkins. Every time I stay at his house and we eat together, he grabs some napkins and he “creates” a new building, a new house, a new room, etc. And still to this day, he hands me a napkin and a pen so I can draw too. He is always teaching me things and he even asked me to help him learn how to use the Internet, so now he keeps updated with the new works from his favorite architects and learning new innovative techniques. I admire my grandfather because even though he has not been formally working for a couple of years now, he never stopped doing what he loved. This shows me that if you really love something you have to put all of your effort and dedication, you always have to keep working and improving because you never stop learning. He always told me that his career was not easy, but he never regretted choosing that profession at all, this motivates me to really love my career and work harder everyday, because even though sometimes you may feel like there is too much work to do, if you really love what you are doing in the end it will all be worth. I will always remember my grandfather by his sketches, and every time I see someone drawing on a napkin, I remind myself to be the best I can be and to put all of my effort in whatever it is I’m doing.
