My grandmother had a dog who lived for 17 years, Blackie. I remember only his lasts years, he was the loyal companion of my grannie. Even dough he was a small breed dog, my sisters, my cousins and I were extremely afraid of this little creature. Blackie was so jealous with my grandma, that he would attack or bark hysterically to anyone who reached her. I remember when I was little how we play to mock him; he usually slept under my grandmothers bed, so we( my sisters, cousins, and I) made contests to see who could cross to the other side of the bedroom with out making him get at us, so we ran, we jumped, we even fled from the bed to the sofa, we climbed furniture, we did every thing to win over him. I don’t remember how or what we won between us, but for sure what we did won was a severe punishment or a lecture on how to treat him well. I have no idea how this could be so fun for us, but believe me, it was. Poor little Blackie he was a pedigree Pekingese, he was actually very beautiful, he had a lot of hair, but the thing is that he didn’t like kids, maybe because we didn’t treat him quite well, but even my mother was afraid of him. After a short research about this breed, it is said that it comes from china, and they were used as emperor’s guardians, they are very brave little dogs, sensitive, independent and extremely affectionate with their master. Maybe that’s why Blackie was so loyal to her. My grandmother loved that dog as if he was one more of his kids, the poor thing in his last days didn’t hear, didn’t bark, and didn’t saw. I remember how he got stocked between the space that separated the kitchen stairs and the refrigerator and we made fun of him, but of course with compassion we helped him get out. After a few weeks of this condition, he was put to sleep because he just didn’t die. Yes my grandmother suffered from that, but she instantly got another puppy, he is also loyal to her, but he is quite sweet. Like that I remember may other things of Blackie, but for sure what I learned about it, was to care and have an animal culture like the responsibilities it implies to have a dog at home, I think it is a very good way to teach kids about responsibility.
