Harampee

To make the priveleged class fill the basket
Just whisper the big man`s presence
They will come in droves like flies
To show their unconditional generosity
At his child`s pre-wedding ceremony

But the poor child would certainly strain
Rolling water-filled drums
For a few shillings he would raise
To fund his basic education

To conduct an harampee
In aid of poor child`s education
Men of means
Like desert rain become scarce
But would make themselves felt
Where other men of means are.

The top people receive much attention
The bottom people receive less attenton
On the spirit of harampee
Long deprived of its  value.

Author's Notes/Comments:

`Harampee`, in Kenya means "pulling limited resources together for a common cause."This term has outlived its meaning. The halvess are taking things to the other halves instead of to the halve-nots.The poor are left out to fend for themselves. Thus the original value of harampee has been denigrated.
