My Grandparent’s elephant
statues collection
My Grandparent kept his Elephant’s collection in his personal office in Morelia, in an upper shelf where he has them by sizes and types. Whether you enter his office for just 5 seconds or distracted you will always notice the elephants, of all type and sizes, small, medium, large, you name it, staring right at you, calling your attention each time, and if you didn’t noticed them by the time you were leaving the office, my grandparent would start showing them to you or telling you about them, and about what exceptional characteristic each one has, how he got it, everything about it. Yes, my Grandfather was obsessed with collecting elephants, but he didn’t talk much about his collection with persons that weren’t from the family. In fact, his profession is being doctor, which means he is a very sociable person, but for an unknown reason he didn’t like people to know about his collection, or his love with elephants, it was a more intern interest, but still for me they were part of his essence. Nowadays, he finds it very difficult to continue with his collection, because of his eye condition, he is almost blind, and can’t walk very well now. It is hard to tell, why he enjoyed that much collecting elephant stuff, but I really enjoyed hearing him talk about it, because once he started the whole problems and world would disappear for him, he was in his special zone, talking of them was like a medicine for him, it made everything seem so insignificant, it was like chocolate for some persons, like a ‘’chill pill’. Now I stop and think about the most amazing and significant thing about his collection, in despite of the fact that it hasn’t grown much bigger for years now, every time we visited him, with no exception, he would give us elephant’s from his valuable collection, to my family, in total they were 4 elephant statues as a souvenir for us to assemble and associate the elephants to him, and it actually worked, because every time we saw a decoration of an elephant it would remind us of him, for me it was a very special act because he was capable of giving up his elephant so we would have a little piece that could remind us of him. Even though he isn’t able of collecting them, I can’t still notice his love for them, and I still think of him when I see elephant souvenirs, for me a elephant is a representation of him.
