Oh those boots! I loved to see that color, texture, and rugged feel, kept away in an old brown box for the day in which they were fit for me. Of my grandfathers’ possessions, they were the ones he cherished best and wished for me to someday have on my then tiny feet. My grandfather, I consider is a simple man, quiet, polite, caring, and from a humble start. He never wished for me anything but happiness, like he once had on that good old day in which he got those old yet special boots. Ever since, I always came upon those boots and looked at them, thinking, pondering, of the day in which they would fit me too. Every day I opened that same old box and saw them sitting there waiting just for me, telling me of all the things that we could be. Eventually that day came in which my grandfather handed me those old rugged boots and as I tried them on they couldn’t have fit any better. Today I look at them with pride, as I ride my horse up and down the hills, as I walk through the sand and the stones, as I ride on my truck on rainy days and I think of him with pride. They might not have been the most beautiful boots out there but they were sure special to me and I made sure to wear them with pride for they belonged to me. They were my grandfathers gift, his legacy and hard work, they were the symbol of his once humble beginnings in which he had nothing more but an old pair of boots as he worked on his family’s ranch. Today he asks me with great curiosity “Son, remember those old boots I gave you? What has it been of them?” As always, I make sure to say they are safely kept in that same old box waiting for another day in which I can take them out on another wild ride. It might have not been much, but to me and him, that old pair means more than anyone could think. That same old pair, I would never trade for anything in the world and as long as they’re with me I’ll make sure that it is that way. Later the day will come for me to take that same old pair and light up the eyes of a young little boy, just like my grandfather did with me on that summer day. (418)
