The mystery of the summer cabin
They waited anxiously for Friday evening after school, they knew that even though they will be far from home for almost a month without their parents spending the summer visiting their grandparents in Hawaii, it was what they most enjoy, though their grandfather doesn’t let them go out after dinner and the weird dishes that the grandmother cooks they always find something interesting to do. They wondered why it was forbidden to get into the garage, once they tried to get in with no permission, they knew something mysterious was hiding in there, but they were always caught by the grandfather who always locks the door so nobody can get inside. They used to go every year since they were 4 years old, but this year will be different because they’ll reunite with Sasha, their oldest cousin, who for the first time has decided to spend the summer in Hawaii. After almost ten hours traveling, they finally arrived, their grandparents welcomed them with their favorite chocolate cake, they seemed to be very happy to receive them.
When Myrna and Mayra saw Sasha they jumped of joy, they didn’t know she was going to arrive so soon, they were expecting her to arrive on Sunday evening because they knew Sasha was very popular in school and couldn’t leave Mexico without making a goodbye party no matter how long she would be away.
Therefore, their friends planned their party on Saturday so she could get to Hawaii on Sunday; luckily she was already there when they got there. The first thing they planned was their first adventure, Sasha was 11 and the twins 9, Sasha was not too interested in playing detectives, and even less peek into the garage but Myrna told her that if the hidden secret was a treasure then they could split it among the three. This way Sasha could afford to buy that make-up kit she loved.
Actions started that night after having that funny grandma’s strange culinary experiment, something like meat balls chicken and rice flavored. They waited until their grandpa went to bed making it easier for them to go out of the cabin; they waited two hours until they were sure he was sound asleep. Sasha went out first and Myrna after her, Mayra took a little time because she went to look for the keys in the kitchen because she was sure her grandpa had hidden the keys in the same place where he kept his cigarettes away from grandma sight.
Shaking nervously to face what they could find behind the garage door, Myrna turned the key and the door opened, they tiptoe, everything was dark and dusty but they continued. Myrna lighted up the linter so they could see around. A large pool table was in their way, an old bicycle, a rusty sign and many old books, it seemed like he collected them.
Suddenly, Sasha spotted a chest almost at the end of the garage. The first thing she though was that she could finally get her make-up kit, but she decided to say nothing until finding what was within. They pride it open, Myrna preferred not to look inside but when her sister and cousin went quite she became curious and observed inside the chest. There was nothing but a newspaper and under it an old soldier’s uniform.
The twins were disappointed in not coming across a treasure and as they didn’t know how to read they not even tried to read the newspaper, but Sasha seemed paralyzed she read the article over and over again, she could not believe it. She drew out the uniform and found a Nazi symbol; she kept quiet and said nothing to Myrna and Mayra. The twins always wonder what the newspaper said and why Sasha stayed away from then on from her grandparent’s cabin.
