Better Luck in College, Charles

Charles stormed into the classroom as the teacher was calling out his name for the daily roll call. "Present!” he exclaimed as he tried to catch his breath. " You couldn't make it on time even for the last day of school?” she asked jokingly as she rolled her eyes. The whole class giggled as Charles walked across the room to his seat. "Great, just what I wanted for my last day of school, a lecture about organizational knowledge," he thought to himself. Mrs. Williams started giving her lecture, but Charles mind was somewhere else. All he could think about for the rest of the class was summer. Charles was going over the details for his summer trip yet once more. First stop - Spain, where he would spend a couple of days in Madrid, before heading to Pamplona for a run with the bulls. Then off to Paris, to visit the Eiffel Tower and the Hotel of Les Invalides. After that, London, for a ride in world famous London Eye and then Switzerland for their world renowned chocolate, followed by Italy an their glorified pizza and pasta for the last stop.

As he looked around the classroom he wondered not only about his classmates summer plans, but also about their plans after they got back. After all, in three months time, most of them would be college students. Charles could not wait for that bell to ring, officially declaring the end of his school days. As a way to make time pass faster, he tried to guess what his classmates would choose as a major. John, his childhood friend who has been around racetracks, cars and speed, would probably end up going for mechanical engineer. Richard, in the other hand, was the guy who always took care of dividing the check whenever they went out for dinner, managing the gas money for road trips and was even the class' treasurer two years in a row. A guy like that would probably end up in finance, a field that had sparked Charles interest.

As he went around the room trying to guess his classmate's academic futures, he worked his way up to Katie. As soon as Charles set his eyes on her his mind ran wild, thinking about how he could spend every summer night with her, just sitting by the lake. For the last 2 and half years, Charles had been trying to build up enough courage to ask her out, but his time was running out. Katie got accepted into UCLA, so this was the last summer before she went off for college.

In addition to that, with his summer trip coming up, he knew he had less than a month and half left to spend with her before she left. As he realizes that today was his last chance to ask her out, the clock, which seemed to have been going backward all day, suddenly started ticking faster. As Charles was battling his thoughts on whether he should as Katie out or not, a paper ball hits him in the face and falls on his desk. As always, a perfect shot from Josh, smiling from across the room as he signaled him to open it. "ASK HER OUT ALREADY!!" read the note. Minutes that seemed like seconds passed as he held the folded note asking Katie to go out with him in his hands. He finally built up the courage to pass the note to his high school sweetheart, but just as he extended his arm, he got what he wished for the whole day. It was too late, as soon as that bell rang, notebooks flied, kids where jumping up and down, screaming with excitement for summer and in a matter of seconds, Katie was out the door.  Charles spent the whole day, waiting for that bell to ring, but know he wished that there something he could do to go back 5 minutes, before the bell rang to hand Katie the note. Charles stood up, slowly putting the note in his pocket as walked motionless out of the room.
