Like stars tossed on the dark night sky,
Streetlights, porch lights, christmas lights,
Lights cover the dark hills.
I look around and realize
That our manmade stars,
Only viewable in some places,
Have wiped out the natural ones.
The ones our ancestors grew up with.
How long will we let our light pollute,
The night sky?
How long until children will not
Know what a star looks like
As it shines in the sky?
How long until even camping
Won't have the wonder of constellations?
How long until kids find pictures
In the bright lights of dark hills
But look up at the sky and see only gray,
I slowly watch as the sky I love,
Filled with stories and history,
Fades away into a neutral gray.
I have seen a night sky
So covered in stars
I could barely tell them apart.
But then I moved my vision across the sky
And watched them disappear
As the lights of a city
Over powered the lights of a star.
A giant ball of flame
Becomes impossible to see
Through the lights of a city.
