Witnessing Death

Sitting in the hospital room

Hand in hand, I rest by your side

In your darkest hour I am there

The fact I stayed made you so happy

I could see it in your sunken eyes

So sad to see you at your worst

You used to be so full of life

I know now I was witnessing death

I remember that last smile, just for me

You looked in my eyes and squeezed my hand

I saw how much I mean to you

I keep that smile in my mind all my days

Never losing the image of you

I see now I was witnessing death
