The denuded tree and the faceless man with severed legs are metaphors of a physical defect that reflects the perceived ugliness of the writer. The line alluding to invisibility is linked to the first theme in that the deformity causes the withdrawal of physical and emotional contact resulting in psychological damage. There must be more to life than outward appearances and cruelty related to it. A very sad poem indeed.
