How do you measure love?
How many forms can it take?
You fall in and out of it’s treasured embrace –
the tumble can make it seem a mistake.
But is it really an error of judgment
when each trip through its maze educates?
How can you have a regret for a moment
when even the memory of its touch can medicate
like the most powerful drug – enticing, ensnaring
you in its sweet trap - making you beg for even more;
leaving you wanting, waiting, weeping and begging
for the gentle caress it uses on your very core?
It draws you in with a hypnotic gaze
Leaving you reeling, in fog, in a daze
That unsettled feeling can enrapture and amaze
And drop you so fast you’ll be reeling for days.
Then it comes back so gently – not with a fire’s blaze
But a calm easy rolling like the gentlest of waves
Stroking the white sandy shores of the bays
Molding your heart like the most pliable of clays
Whispering promises – the security it portrays
Assures your truest soul that it never betrays
Would never leave you languishing – it never delays
Its embrace of your emotions in so many ways
Burning bright then growing cold
Love takes you on a journey in life
Opening your spirit; closing your eyes
It heals like a drug, it wounds like a knife
Once it draws you in there’s nothing to be done
It bonds us closer with every turn it can take
No weapon can shield you from its effect
Held in its talons there is no escape
But the simple truth of why we give our love
Despite hurts and wounds through the years
Is that the possibility of pain doesn’t matter at all –
Love is all we need to conquer our fears.
