A Remembrance to Rebels

Bernard, why are you here,

After all things you’ve done,

They don’t like what you did,

They’re after your tongue.

You disrupted their system,

You corrupted the youth,

Created propaganda,

They told me they had proof.

You look at me with a stare,

You wonder what I mean,

How do I know what they have?

How do I know what they need?

Together we worked against them,

And I was in love with you,

We fought with our lives,

For what they taught was not true,

We made our leader flee for safety,

And you left, and we were caught,

The resistance was disbanded,

Soon we were re-taught.

That’s what happened when you were gone,

It’s why I’m on their side,

They’ve conditioned me to hate you,

To report you and bring demise.

It’s not that I forgot you,

Or forgot your interception,

It’s just that what they did to me,

Altered my perception.

They put me under the machines,

The same ones you were fighting,

I fought against them like you will,

But you submit to their spiting.

You scream and scream, and no one’s there,

You wont say that you agree,

They say that you will die there,

There’s not a chance to be free.

After the torture and beating,

You manage to say okay,

They look at you with happy eyes,

And send you on your way.

You’re happy to be out of there,

You’ve got a new identity,

The bruises are fading,

You’re glad you have serenity.

I cannot say I’m sorry,

It’s illegal to help you out,

You used to be my friend,

Then they placed me as a scout.

They knew that you’d come back,

They knew you didn’t leave forever,

They put me in this position,

Don’t hate me Winston: It’s their power.

Notify the government,

Let them know you're here,

They've told me that they're waiting for you,

And the time is running near.

They’ll take you if you’re willing,

If you’re not, they’ll use force,

Don’t cry, or scream, or deny,

That will make them much, much worse.

They’ll keep you in a cage,

You’ll lose track of all time,

Try to forget your past,

Now it’s soured like a lime.

People will always think,

That your dreams were nothing,

That you deserve the punishment,

Ironically, that’s something.

You tried to stop them,

You tried harder than me,

You’ll continue to try,

Maybe you’ll never see.

Maybe you’ll never get past that,

You’re life will be spent alone,

Beatings every hour,

You may not survive their tone.

What you did was try,

It’s more than most can say,

But of the things they’ve taught me,

One is, that no one slips away.

Excuse me now, dear Allie,

I apologize again,

I have to call the government,

You’ve committed such a sin.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This was written for three rebellious book characters that I look up to for going against the wrong in the world.
