Widow of the Sea
High upon a rocky bluff,
stands the sentinel of the sea
She beams her light of hope and home
and brings my sailor back to me
How oft I’ve sat on this rocky ledge
Gazing down at the ocean’s depth
I wondered how many men have died
and how many wives have wept.
I pray once more for your return
That God and the waters are good
I feel your callused hand in mine
Smell the aroma of sea and damp wood
The sun comes up as I stand watch
Like the lighthouse has done for years
I strain to see that one small speck
and hold back my store of tears
The morning fog hampers my view
The dampness clings to my hair
I long for a glimpse of you
Beg the sea to be kind and share
Then slowly I spot your weathered boat
as I let my dammed tears flow
Their saltiness blurs the sight of you
They taste of the sea, you know
What fate for a fisherman’s wife
that her tears would taste of the sea
For the ocean is his dearest love
She just shares her man with me
Not too many days on dry land
till the tides pull you out the door
So I’ll love you madly while I can
Then stand watch with the lighthouse once more.
