To Kiss the Moon
I lay in my bed, cold and in thought
when the moon struck a light and soon I was caught
in its beaming gleam and wonderous shine
and I took it in hand and claimed it as mine.
It dazzled, and sparkled, and shone with a glow
and distracted a crowd below my window.
I leaned out my bedroom to take in the scene
and shouted "You cannot have it! It is mine to be seen!
No one will have it, it is mine to behold!
Its warmth will keep me; no more am I cold!
You cannot steal it and I will not sell!
You cannot have it! With me it will dwell!"
But the crowd merely stood there, stately and still
for their gaze was cast on a faraway hill.
And soon my attention to the sky was drawn
And I realized too late that this was the dawn.
"Goodbye dear old moon, for now I do see
that your place is elsewhere and not here with me.
The place in the sky that I plucked you there from
now beckons you tither and tells you to come.
The Sun now approaches and hastens your leave.
You must go now; this I believe."
My selfish self has blinded my eyes:
My good sense was burried and I was not wise.
I.My stolen gift did not last very long
And that is the point of this quaint little song.
