THE SNAKE’S EXCUSE
The Nazi ends his life in a small cottage
With damp sheets; under his bed he has
Useless German Marcs and plans for attack.
Always there is opposition and the serpent
Is peeking his head out with his tongue to
Sense if the time is ripe for aggravated assault.
Even if we pay the rent on time in damp basements
We remain under siege because we are using space
That is comfortable for the serpent who likes it damp
We are the children of children who habitually have a
Lung disease because we breath in the grief of this
World. The sub-tropics are beautiful but moldy and damp.
Damp and clammy is the world of giving in to the serpent.
And our homes are appraised for less because of the mold.
Why do we always make it so comfortable for the snake?
The innocent child will talk with the snake because the child
Is without guile. Yes, it will even bond with the snake in its
Own lair. The snake’s excuse is always, “You knew I was a snake.”
