LYRE BIDDEN EUPHONY
Sibyls and dire prophets in their foretelling do not explain
Suffering nor why love hasn’t been learned; nor, what
Continues on in death and all other irreconcilables.
It is as if the world changes so quickly that we are unable
And ill equipped to maintain a posture of equanimity before
All is finished and we fall back to the old ancient ground.
We have endured so many innumerable winters and nothing
In those antecedents deaths tell us why; all we have is the
Comparable sufferings to correlate without any meaning.
If we had such knowledge, as did Alexander the Great, we
Would use the potent auguries to ascertain how we could
Defeat and conquer others and perpetuate the old laments.
The lesson of Orpheus and the metamorphoses of death are to
Not look back to Sheol as did lots wife; it is in that intent
To see suffering that creates the whole panorama of it.
His coming and going was a lesson not to linger and his lyre
Bidden music moves from the lower hells to the higher worlds
is an injunction that life always rises and does not look back.
