A Stronger Wiser Me

I said I'd do what's best for you.
A promise that I kept.
If you should ask for me to go,
though my heart be left bereft.

I asked you only days before
for three words, I need to hear.
But even with your last good bye,
you wouldn't make it clear.

I'd give up all, I love you so
and this, for you, I'll do.
But with all the feelings that we shared
still you won't say, I love you too.

Good-byes were said and now I'm gone.
You have just what you wanted.
I know for weeks, months, maybe years,
by your memories I'll be haunted.

But of all the things that hurt me so,
I think your biggest 'sin',
is that you just won't say those words...
Yes, I love you, Kim.

Don't waste your time trying to explain
I already heard your reason.
Thru fantasy, we shared our love.
Yet three words are marital treason.

So these words, you will not say
and this makes everything alright?
Does it mean you are forgiven?
It's not that black and white.

You've given me your excuses.
Told me all the reasons why.
Does it matter to your heart,
the many times you've made mine cry?

Even as you walk away, like a bone,
you toss me that last word.
The 'strings attached', the 'ties that bind'
I can't believe again, I heard.

Ah yes, you mention  'someday'.
But, will I still be here at last?
If you cannot say you love me now,
Can you, after years have past?

With this broken heart, I won't decide
what my future allows to be.
For years down the road,
I may become, a stronger, wiser me.
