If a tree falls and no one is around
to hear it –
does it make a sound?
The lonely tree
solitary, desolate
clinging alone to the unforgiving earth
Gives up at last
roots relinquish their stubborn hold
Slowly, silently, the tree tips
lands softly on the ground
no one hears
no one cares
the fallen tree lies
alone
Passers-by see nothing amiss
The land is no less scenic
is not changed but for the angle
of the lonely tree
If a tree falls and many are around
to see it –
are its death throes heightened?
The social tree
member of a forest
Its time has come
snow, pests, wind
all have taken their toll
The tree begins to fall
cracking, snapping
breaking through the branches
trees who won’t let go
Landing with a crash
though the ground is soft with moss
leaving a trail of broken
arms
The forest is no longer whole
Passers-by are disturbed
a mess of broken branches
that will not grow back
A hole where a tree once stood
