My great grandmother’s cards for playing “Continental”. She always was playing cards with my grandma and with my aunts but what was the most funny thing about that was that she always cheated. Even though that everybody always knew that she was cheating but that was the fun part because she always tried to trick someone else to show them their cards. Her way of playing was really fun and there was no person who didn’t enjoy it, even when you ended up losing against her you would have fun. We called her “Abuelita Kena” even though her name was really Eugenia. She was a great person and she was always very helpful and always in a good mood. Kena always tried to talk with her grandchildren and she always wanted to make them something delicious to eat (specially her soup). Eugenia was a great person she never complained and she was always happy.
I will never forget all of the times when we were in South Padre Island and my great grandmother was outside the department, near the pool and she was beneath the umbrella, beside the table and always in her same chair with her poker cards. We always spent about at least a week in South Padre Island and there was no day in which she would not play “Continental” (I don’t know how they called in English but that was how she called it in Spanish or she also used to call it “Chinazo”). She used to live with my grandma in her last 5 years and even though I’m not sure if she played cards everyday with her, I could bet that she did without even doubting. I bet that that’s the reason of why my grandma is also so good for playing cards, because of her practice and maybe some hereditary ability haha.
Kena is one of the persons who I will remember for my whole life; not only for her cards and her tricks and making us laugh when playing with her, but because of her whole way of being. The poker cards was a symbol for us of her and everytime I play or see someone playing any card game I remember her. She passed away some years ago but even though I knew her when I was a kid I will remember all of the good memories we had and all of the times I had fun with her.
