I think we should hug a veteran every day…not just on Veteran’s Day.
and I think it’s a hug we should make last…
because a veteran doesn’t stop being a veteran…once Veteran’s Day has passed.
Because they are not just veterans who defended our freedom…
they are our sisters and our brothers…
they are our neighbors, our friends, our children…
they are our fathers and our mothers.
Because families know the cost of sending our loved ones off to fight…
as we wave, shed a tear and lovingly whisper their names…
we know every soldier sent off to war…will not return the same.
That’s why there are two times we hug our loved ones the tightest…
(It is something family members learn)
The first…is the day we send them off to war…
The second…is the day when they return.
I say we add a third hug to the mix…I say we all find a way
to thank every veteran we see…by giving them a hug
not just today…but every day.
Yes, I say thank a veteran every day…
give them a hug…
shake their hand
let those of us who’ve never fought
let those who did
know we are thankful…
know we understand.
