As a poll worker it was my job to check in voters, pass out ballots and assist with impartiality...
But I was not trained nor was not prepared for what I was about to see.
I watched a man from another country, an older man in his prime,
Who recently became a citizen...vote for the first time.
I watched the worry in other first time voters faces disappear
Into a proud, embarrassed smile as we yelled and clapped and cheered.
I saw mom’s and dad’s bring their children...for they wanted them to see
How people are elected...in a free democracy.
I saw a man pushing his father...in a wheel chair...who never said a word
But smiled as he cast his ballot...glad his voice was heard.
I saw persistence on the face of a young man struggling with CP
Yet determined to fill out his ballot...independently.
I saw a woman who could barely walk...take the ballot in her hand
And with a smile say, “I’m going to vote...as long as I can stand.”
I saw tears on the face of an Air Force sergeant when he walked through the door
As he thanked us for reminding him...what he was fighting for.
Yes, I saw many wonders as a poll worker...and let me add one final note
I may not always agree with people’s decisions...but I love to watch them vote.
