My Grandmother's sugar fingers

My grandmother had an amazing ability to cook, but specially with the desserts. She did any kind anyone could imagine, and always delicious. Besides all her perfect cooking abilities, she had one special recipee for a dessert that became a tradition in my family. The recipee was passed down from my great grandmother to her, and she taught it to my mother. Every christmass' eve family dinner we'd enjoy a tray full of that fabuolous dessert. It is hard to explain, but we call them "sugar fingers". The name comes from logic, because they have the shape of a finger and they have sugar on the outside. Everybody who isn't a member of my family that tries it, is amazed and asks for someone to make for them. My grandmother passed away on May of 2010, and we still remembered her tradition last christmass with the amazing dessert that she has passed down another generation, like her mother did for her. It is amazing how just a symbolistic thing like that can keep a family tradition and constantly reminding me of my grandmother baking all kinds of desserts, always happy. One thing I didn't mention is that my grandmother was diabetic. Even though she couldn't eat her amazing "sugar fingers" she enjoyed watching us having a good time and enjoying them; for her, that was her satisfaction, watching the unity of the family. Well, sometimes we allowed her to have only one "sugar finger", because we knew that she was very careful and always took her problem seriously, so she deserved a tiny piece a year. In my family I have two different family dinners, one in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, which is where my grandmother lived with all my family from my mother's side. The other one is here in Monterrey, with the family of my father's side. My mom started to cook those fingers and taking them to the family dinner in Monterrey. It was a complete success. Everybody was amazed and eat all of them. I hope this amazing tradition keeps on going throughout my family always, for my grandmother's sake, and her mother, to keep a tradition of family union, and prosperity during christmass, and maybe a future business selling them!
