Saturday is probably the best day of the week for my grandmother and me, she gets to host the entire family, made up of twenty-one cousins and twelve aunts and uncles, and I get to enjoy the best dishes I’ve tasted so far in my life. Whenever I picture my grandma, besides reminiscing different experiences we’ve had, all I see is her and the amazing food she cooks for us with great joy. But, this is no ordinary food, this is not something you eat only to get the energy needed to live, no. This is more than just food. Recipes that have been improved throughout her years of experience, ingredients that have all been chosen carefully and mixed on point, spices that besides giving an exquisite flavor, show the love she has for us. I believe that my grandma enjoys this weekday even more than I do, I perfectly imagine her thinking about the next Saturday right after we leave so that she can surprise us with the next dish she’ll cook. Taking petitions form all of the cousins and deciding which one to make can be hard, but she know exactly what fits and what doesn’t. We can either be frustrated and stressed from the whole week, tired because of Friday night parties, or angry at anything and her food will completely change our day. If I were to choose one dish, I would definitely go for her Noodle Soup, a soup that has been wrongly attempted to make by all of my aunts and my mother; a soup whose recipe will remain a secret for many years to come, a soup that I could finish by myself and want even more. My grand mother may not be an elite cook, she has not taken any classes in her 81 years of life, but everything makes sense once you think about how fond she grew to all of of her sons and daughters. I hear stories from my mother about how special meals were to her family when she was young. It was a time where everyone could express themselves and share something about their day while my grandma felt an extreme satisfaction by looking at their reactions to the food she’d make. Her cooking traditions and techniques have been enriched all along these years, I hope one day I’ll be able to learn her countless recipes and be able to say “This soup is actually as good as my grandma’s.”
