wishing for something he'll never get, hoping for something he's never had
and dreaming of something he's already known
hoping for the hopeless wish that someday he'll know it again.
and reaching for the possibility hesitantly
because the fire is so beautiful to look at
and gives out such wonderful warmth
but hold the fire too close, and you'll be burned
he has learned that the hard way
so cautious is the way he has learned to approach everything
subtlety is his armor, and what a heavy armor it is to bear
filter every word until only vagaries remain
not broken, but still cracked, looking for the glue to hold him together
because the ups and downs are growing less, but more extreme
mania is no comfort when the depression comes along
and depression can't touch the mania until it has ridden its course.
