Happy ending

The wind  was a brisk cool breeze on that October day. The leafs had changed from the bright green to the bright yellows, reds, and the dull brown.  Falling and blowing in the wind all around him. It would of been a beautiful day for anyone but him. At his feet laid the tombstone that read his dead beloved wife's name. Today was their 10th anniversary  and also was a year since she had passed away. Just standing there by himself one year finally broke lose. And fell down his cheek and before he could wipe it away it was like a river had let lose.  He hasn't cried since the day he had to bury her and with all the emotion held so tightly back was finally being released. Moments went by turning into hours.  Finally he said his silent goodbyes And turned around and began his slow stumbled walk up the hill back leaning on his cane for support.

A year before it was a beautiful day for late October. He was returning for a had day of work. But he knew that no matter how hard his day had been, tonight was going to be perfect. It was him and his wife's anniversary and they were going out to for dinner at the finest place to eat in town. Walking in the door he flew upstairs to hurry and get ready for the night. Rushing into the bathroom he shaved his weathered face. Brushed his teeth and in such almost slipped and fell getting into the shower.
All dressed with a navy blue collard polo, black slacks, good watch, he tied his freshly polished dress shoes.
Looking in the mirror and smiled with excitement, walked from the bedroom downstairs to find his wife sitting in the kitchen. Walking up slowly behind her gentle placing his hand on her shoulder as she turned around and fell into his arms. She was just as excited as he was.
She had a tight blue dress that flowed down her body like a twisting river stopping just above her knees. With black heals on the still was 6 inches shorter then her husband.
He then asked her to turn around and close her eyes.
Without a word spoken she did and he pulled a necklace from his pocket and fasten it around her neck. It was a beautiful white good heart inlaced with diamonds.
He then said that she could look.
Her hands touched it ever so gently and he could see it her eyes that she loved it. Without a word she kissed him and they began walking outside to get into the car and head to dinner.
Dinner was amazing. He had a steak with mash potatoes, corn, and a side salad. He had a single beer and water with the rest of his meal.
She had chicken with a side salad and baked beans.  She o my drank on special events and she had a glass of red wine that lasted her the whole dinner. Talk was light and seemed to be Almost perfect. No stress of each others day.
As they began to get up and walk out the door she said let's go for a walk in the park under the stars. Of course he agreed. She had eventually taken her heals off and he was caring them. Both becoming tired they agreed to head back to the car and head home.

The drive was only 20 minutes and has they came to the last intersection the light turned red. Waiting for the light to turn green the man reached over and held his wife's hand and said I love you.
The light changed and he began to go through the intersection when a violent jolt struck the right side of the car. The sound of crushing glass and metal. The horn blaring and air bags deploying rapidly.
It was a horrific scene the tiny car was crushed and was almost unrecognizable. The truck that had hit them had flipped over on its side.
The rings in his ears was unbearable. He couldn't hear his own thoughts or even began to process what had happened.  He tried to move but couldn't. He then passed out. Waking up in the back of an ambulance rushing the the hospital! Grabbing the paramedics arm demanding to know what happened! Where his wife was!
With a stone cold face as if the paramedic had seen a ghost. He explained as calmly as possible that he had been in an accident and that his wife had not made it.
Fainting with those words buzzing in his ears.

Waking a couple days later in the hospital with a cast on his leg. Learning that he had been in a car accident. His beautiful wife had not made it was killed on impact. The questions of how this could happen. Who was the driver.
The driver was an elderly man who was coming home from work when he suffered a stroke behind the wheel.
His perfect life had become cold and gray without his wife of 7 years. His high school sweetheart was gone!

Happy Ending

What an horrific tale. Just the opposite of a happy ending. It has quite upset me I had hoped for a happy ending. But well written, and maintained the readers attention.
