The Cure

The lights beam down on the Capital City

A gust of night awakens the leaves

The streets are clean but the drains are gritty

The truth lay asleep while the whole world grieves.

Alive on the inside but certainly still

A man sits alone with a hat in his hand

He should not have taken that third or fourth pill

But screw it, he thinks, I play in a band

Carried off to a faraway home

Our friend meets the face of an ominous fellow

He knows this place well, he picks a new bone

His head can’t be far from that capacious pillow

We’ve got to give credit where it’s overdue

The library notice says read the fine print

Everybody’s alone, but we’re in the same zoo

So suck it up, kid, and take the right hint

Tie your laces up tight, for tonight, it’s war

Against all that is lost or damaged or dead

With the wings of an eagle, o’er battlefields soar

And see that the right faces have been painted red

It’s a war against depravity, poverty, sickness

It seems that the hospitals are quite overbooked

Grab a seat in the lobby and soon we will cure this

But as for tonight, You’re still just as hooked

So take your medicine, get your fix

But tomorrow, know, you’ll be back here again

You cannot escape the inevitable matrix

Life has trapped you, the maze never ends.

But know that the answer lies deep within

Underneath all of your human desires

Remember the words of your closest of kin

“Within each of us burns an insatiable fire

A fire not quenched by the coolness of water

That cannot be buried ‘neath sand, nor smothered.

The only way to escape this slaughter

Is to place your hand in the hand of another”
