Take all the things we don’t need
throw them on the fire
let the flames taste the edges
and delight in their gourmet feast.
We will train it and tame it
and mold it to our will;
a pet that consumes the ground it walks on
and disintegrates its leash,
yet will be obedient.
Heel!
The flames won’t outrun us.
Sit!
Its heat will remain.
Lay down!
It will put itself out.
Come!
It will re-ignite at our bidding.
Still, we must let it play now and then,
and put on our fireproof suits,
so we can wrestle and roll,
and pat its head,
play tug-of-war with its bone,
then lay it to rest in its bed.
