“Forgotten Church and Peoples Resentment”

The story  “On the Road” by Langston Hughes shows how the church has forgotten its primary objective and how people has a big resentment against black people. “On the Road” tells the story of Sargeant, an unemployed black guy who struggles against Great Depression consequences. When Sargeant arrives a town in the middle of the night, he asks for help in the reverends house. When the reverend opens the door and sees that it was a black guy who was asking for help, the reverends refuses to help him and closes the door immediately.  Hungry and homeless, Sargeant seeks for help in a Church, where he encounters with two white big doors. Sargeant tries to brake the doors, when a couple of white guys started to shout against Sargeant’s acts, while the policemen makes an effort to take out Sargeant out of the church. The conflict ends when the church falls down and Sargeant escapes. Now, Sargeant is looking for a new shelter, when he finds out that Christ is walking besides him. The story ends when Sargeant notices that everything is just a dream and now he is jail. Hughes story describes how the Church has left its objective and principles behind. The Church and the religious people suppose to serve humanity, including Afro-American unemployed guys. When Christ was lived, he gave everything to help the poor. Hence, there is a contrast between what happens and what really happens. At the beginning of the story we can see how a reverend, a religious man, denies helping the black guy. Further in the story, when Christ walks besides Sargeant, he surprises to see Christ at his own level. This demonstrates that the Church is an elitist institution in which poor people has no participation. Another explored topic by the author is the discrimination and the resentment that the white people show against black people. When Sargeant opens the church, the white people reacted against him, on how possible can a black guy enter their church exclusively for white guys. Another violent reaction occurs when the police officer hits Sargeant while he is in jail. His language and the way he treats the unemployed reflects resentment against color people. Concluding, “On the Road from Langston Hughes is a great example on how the church has forgotten its main purpose, leaving the poor on its own, and the resentment against black guys.

What do you consider to be Dead Poets Society‘s central theme?

I think that the central theme of “Dead Poets Society” is following your dreams. During high school a lot of students feel pressure of their parents, and they cannot decide for themselves their future, instead they need to follow what their parents have prepared for them. So I think that this movie tries to spread the idea that to really enjoy life and be happy, everyone should follow their dreams and seeks what is better for them. This agrees with “Carpe Diem” which is to seize the day, or live each day fully and follow your dreams.

Response to ‘Citizen of the World’

In my opinion, to help stop global warming I can do 9 out of the 10 things that Al Gore proposed. Things such as: changing a light bulb, recycling more, check my tires, use less hot water, avoid products with lot of packaging, adjust my thermostat, plan a tree, and turn off electronic devices are really activities I can take into account and contribute to help stop global warming. Probably the only thing I can not do is drive less, cause traveling from one place to another in Monterrey it is really difficult, due to the long distances between places, so walking or for riding a bike would make traveling really difficult.
