Cooking for one sucks

Folder:
Early 20s

Have you ever tried to cook for one?
It sucks…
Really, cooking for one isn’t easy.

To begin with, most foods or meals
Do not easily prepare to one helping:
Rice, mashed potatoes,
Stuffing, spinach,
Salad, corn,
Peas, carrots,
None of these foods lend themselves
To being prepared in
Single serving size.

Cooking for one sucks…

Even buying food for one is tough;
You get a bag of salad
And a week later’
You have brown mushy lettuce,
Into the trash it goes.
Tomatoes go soft too quickly,
And bread becomes moldy.

Cooking for one is sucks…

Sure, I could prepare
Multiple servings of some of meals,
The one’s that’ll keep for a bit.
But I’ve never been one for leftovers.
Reheating food is not a skill of mine;
I either end up with
Dried out memoires of meals past,
Or bit into a pile of steaming hot something
With an ice cold center.

Cooking for one sucks…

Heating up the whole oven to cook,
One single solitary chicken breast,
It’s just wasteful and sad.

Preparing one baked potato,
(Since mashed is not an option for one)
Just looks lacking and lost.

Getting the charcoal grilled fired up,
For a lonely burger or hot dog,
It’s just illogical and isolating.

But you wanna know what sucks most
About cooking for one…?

Sitting at a table with one plate
And one glass of wine,
Looking across at the empty place
That is never filled.
Knowing that there’s no one
To keep you from possibly finishing
The whole bottle in one night.

And that there’s no one to help you
With all those dishes,
Because even though it’s just you,
The sink is still filled with pots and pans

Cooking for one is tough…

Cooking for one sucks.
