At Mount Ebal

[Joshua 8:30]

Some of them are ferocious, some unstable;
and some behave as if they are possessed:
all of the strands in one most tiresome cable
that binds them to us.  Even when we rest,
the lurk about and infiltrate the camp---
like ghosts with fearful voices, cold and damp.
Still, as we walk along the chosen way,
we must meet them; it really sours the day.
Despite their braggart tones and high conceit,
their shriveled souls will suffer sound defeat.
With much bombast, they hate us and condemn
our efforts; but they fail to understand
that we will someday occupy this land,
and keep it with no place, at all, for them.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Although ostensibly about the pilgrimage of Israel through Canaan, the inspiration actually came from the many people who crude speech and profanity I must put up with daily at the call center.
