Today, our high school's Athletic Department
expelled, from the varsity football team, the
most successful quarterback (and team captain)
in our school's history, who led the team to
state championship.
The reason for expulsion was not made clear
to us: was it the length of his hair (now well
below his shoulders after two years uncut)?
The dress code, written fifty years ago, does
not allow for that.
Or, maybe, the severe dislike of shoes he
developed this past summer, such that, beneath
his distressed jeans' frayed cuffs, his feet have been bare
or sheathed in socks. He attends classes that way,
and has been noticed.
Or, maybe, because---also this past summer---
he began dating a male, the class bookworm,
disliked by most of us since kindergarten
("fairy queer faggot" we called him): and who would
have thought otherwise?
Now they defy all social expectations
by "going steady" as a couple. And our
school's finest quarterback will be absent from
the team, his senior year; and he does not seem
to care all that much!
