Anonymity

A series of numbers upon a page
depicting gender, race and age
serialized and categorized
down to the color of my hair and eyes

Is this who I am? You have one too
A number, a card, a label for you
This is of course, no real description
The true person within requires decryption

It works in my favor
they believe my behavior
will reflect my I.D.
They know nothing of me

IF the system were to fail
would all of those details
define you socially?
Affect you mentally?

Most likely not, you would have to agree
we use these to fuel society
but if they were done away
we would still be depraved

I understand the need for these
Indeed, I exploit them willingly
I accept one thing lovingly:
My anonymity

How easy it to slip unseen
throughout the spaces in-between
the gaps so great and constantly
breaching their own security

A system that defies its own preservation
needs no enemy of a foreign nation
within this Roman train of thought
derailed from its riches sought

From within it falls
its pitiful walls
so ornate with gold
now writhe with mold

They continued to drink, convinced of their glory
while all the while rewriting their story
No one thought to plant new vines
Eventually... there was no more wine

What glorious plunder we will excavate!
How the poor will prosper from the unfortunate's fate
We can build a new future from those self written tomes
and mount idols of platinum in our trash heap homes

Doesn't sound too appealing you say?
I wouldn't have it any other way
Its people like me that gain the most
from robbing your grave and mocking your ghost

Most important to me
is anonymity
I am you I am me
I'll be a slave to be free
As long as think these shackles hold me
they are all at my mercy, I'll escape as need be
Three meals a day
I don't have to pay
when Rome finally falls
I'll just walk through those walls
singing and skipping through a wasteland of greed
taking things that I want and things I don't need
Wondering if I'll be alive on the day
When they decide to rebuild it, just the same way

Author's Notes/Comments:

Turned out a little more political than I would have liked but oh well.
