The Balcony of Thinking

It was one night of 1996 spring nights, when I came back home (actually my father’s home but I used to live there), about 1 am to find my 8 years old Niece sitting all by herself in the balcony, thinking! As I noticed. A dialogue, naturally, takes place in such occasions:

I: good evening young lady

She: good morning uncle, it’s now another young day

I: right, it’s a head of a new start! So, why aren’t you then sleeping? Isn’t there a school tomorrow?

She: I failed to sleep

I had to sit down on the rim of the short wall in the front of the balcony in order to throw a lecture of how important for the young ones to get up early and go to school with full energy and capability of comprehension and how too early it is for a young girl to sit in a balcony alone and think like that, but before I collect my scattered mental resources and get ready to utter:

She: why Uncle do you always come home late?

I: I keep running, dear, day and night like a crazy donkey that seeks to make a breakthrough and go through a Darwinian type of a mutation in order to transform into Arabian Horse!

She: you filled the house with books! Do you really read all of these?

I: sincerely, I try. Every night … late at night … when there is no noise… no shouts, I bury my mind into my books and keep reading until my brain say to my mind: hey, I am on the verge of a collapse. And, I tell you, I feel so safe and so content to find me the next day lying among my beloved piles of books.

She: what are these books about any way?

I: some about system engineering (my latest major field). some about Physics ( my first and forever field), and books of poetry, history but the majority is books in philosophy

She: what is philosophy?!!

I: a stream of thoughts that had fallen from the roof of time to sweep generations after generations minds. It has been initiated by some Greek lunatics who wanted to prove that they are not really that lunatic but the world keeps looking at it’s contents from a lunatic angle! Those are the pioneer philosophers

She: and do you like philosophy?

I: sure

She: (smiling) you must be then a lunatic as your philosophers

I: this is definitely partially logical and slightly convincing argument, but, dear, according to Aristotle, deductions should be based on 2 axioms not one

And as I was trying to explain and logically prove, to my own niece,  how un-lunatic, and how sober, wise and concerned I am, she waved her skinny cute hand saying: good night uncle,  there is a school tomorrow.

I found myself then face to face with the moon, in that cozy balcony, staring at me with that simple rounded bright face! May be to teach me that life is much simpler than I thought.

I then thought may be I should cancel the reading session tonight and just sleep in order to prepare my mind for the next day interesting lessons in the school of life.
