Attention to Orders

Attention to orders. On recommendation of the Commander-in-Chief and approved by Congress, it is hereby ordered by the Secretary of the Army, that the rank of Major be conferred on Costickson, Sean; 321-77-3611, effective 1 November 2005.

To do the honors, ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, George W. Bush.

Congratulations Major. Ms. Costickson, will you come forward please?

Mom, watch the children for me.

Ms. Costickson, will you be so kind as to put the oak leaf on his right shoulder and I will put the one on his left shoulder.

Sir, those aren’t Major’s leaves sir. Those are Lieutenant Colonel leaves.

Madam, you are absolutely right. As your Commander-in-Chief son, I am giving you a field promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.

Sir, I don’t know what to say, except thank you.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Costickson.

Ah yes, we have another bit of business…may I have the medal please. Read the citation please.

Attention to Orders. By order of the President, the Bronze Star for Gallantry in the face of the enemy is hereby awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Sean Costickson. On 2 February 2005, Lieutenant Colonel Costickson distinguished himself when in the face of enemy fire he left his place of cover and dragged two of his fallen comrades to safety. His actions and his following actions of removing his men to safety reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and United States Army.

Colonel, it is my honor to pin this on you. It is as much for you as for every man and woman in the line of fire. I salute you sir.

Sir! (salute)

The citation please. Ms Costickson, please step over to this side of your husband we have something for you. I give this to you in honor of all the spouses that are keeping their households together while their spouses are over in harm’s way. It reads:

On behalf of a grateful nation for the contributions of Seina Costickson to the war effort. Seina has been instrumental in coordinating the efforts of many organizations where she lives to provide supplies to an orphanage created by then Captain Costickson and his men. It was through her diligent efforts, the food stuff, clothing, and educational materials were funneled to the orphans. Through her continued efforts, the orphanage has grown from the ten children it started with to over fifty children today.

Ms Costickson, we thank you for your contribution.

Thank you Mister President. On behalf of all the spouses left behind, thank you for this honor.

Colonel Costickson, the microphone is yours.

Sir! Thank You, Sir!

Well sir, I am really at a loss for words. A little over a month ago, we lost a dear friend, one who was really the driving force behind the orphanage. She ran the place, mothered the children and made sure they were well cared for. It was through her efforts that we were able to move them from the camp to an old building near the camp. It is with a heavy heart that I remember her here. I know that somewhere she is looking down on us and smiling. Linda Lieaday wherever you are. We love you and miss you and say thank you.

Sir, I would trade all of this if only she could have been here today with us. She deserves all the accolades more than I. (sniff).

Well I that case, Colonel, we won’t make you give up a thing, but we do have a little surprise for you.

The curtain please.

Linda?!?!?

Author's Notes/Comments:

In order to give the flavor of a military ceremony, I felt strongly that it had to be done in this form. I apologize that it is not poetic, but I felt moved to put it in this form for the most impact. Thank you for your comments and encouragement. IF you missed any part it may be seen at http://home.cfl.rr.com/hucksoap/letters_home.htm.
