poem_166_I_Barely_Knew

Never really taking history

As anything but such

And for some particular reason

Today I learned so much

On the discussion of WWII

A great battle to the world

Sudden realization hit me

Many thoughts were unfurled

As I read on this story

A condensed “The Longest Day”

I became speechless or

Greater, actually, to say

The description; the planning

The images I saw

Were amazingly intense

I was in total awe

World War II

Such a declaration of peace

Our nations coming together

Fighting to their cease

All in the end

When the battling is done

Here our nation stands

Together as one

I am indebted with gratitude

To these men who fought

I am so thankful for

The wisdom I was taught

But what I am most thankful

As I finished reading the story

Is to have had the chance to live with

My grandfather who fought for this glory

A wise man, who survived

Lived to tell his experience

How bravely he strived

Through the military defense

James Austin Pack

He, against many things, came through

My unforgettable grandfather

And the veteran I barely knew
