My Grandmother's Thimble

And there she is like always, the sweetest grandmother in the world, sitting in front of the sewing machine sewing her own clothes, and all of this for fun. She can be there for hours and hours and she never get bored, and it is because she loves the culture, but more of a cultural thing, she loves thimbles. In her house you can find thimbles everywhere… in the kitchen, in the living room, in her bedroom, in the whole place, and if you want to touch one you better be careful because they are wonderful. And I can conceive a perfect image of my grandmother a little bit upset when my cousins and I play with those pieces of art.

She has been collecting thimbles since I have memory. And wherever she travels, she looks for a place to get some thimbles to put them in her collection. Those little weird things are from all around the world, it doesn’t matter if she gets two or three thimbles of the same place, they are all different and with a very unique shape.

Everyone in the family and also in the neighborhood knows that my granny loves thimbles, so whenever someone gets back from a trip, you will find that person in my grandmother’s house talking with her about their travel and handing her a new thimble. The most classical thimbles are in a really important place, they are in a showcase in a corner of the living room but some others are really useful to her. But there is one with a particular story; it was given to my grandmother in a very special occasion, that day she would never forget. It was a beautiful afternoon, the sun was bright as a happy kid’s eyes, the nature sounds flew all around, and my grandmother was sitting outside when suddenly a young man riding a horse arrived to my granny’s house. He came near to her and kneeled and proposed to her. He wasn’t a stranger; he was her 3 years boyfriend, which she met at the town’s fair where she was the fair queen.  After she agreed to his petition her mother gave her a thimble, a very special one, it was unique and very antique. That thimble became very special to my grandmother because with that little piece of history she made her wedding dress.
