American Dream

Whatever happened

to the pursuit

of happiness?

It seems all we’re pursing

nowadays is success

at the expense

of happiness.

Is this the American dream:

living and dying

for more green?

We’re just machines

working hard for cash

only to trash

all we purchase

in a flash.

Our values slashed

with enough stash

to fill a cemetery.

But what about

the bodies inside

the coffins?

They’re worthless,

just corpses

with no purpose.

Flesh decaying

with jewels fading

and souls empty.
