The person everyone saw
Out in the public
Was not who I was
Behind closed doors.
What happened when
No one was looking
Was socially unacceptable
So I kept the real me secret.
I was proper and contained
To the scrutinizing eye
When inside I was a mess,
Falling apart at the seams.
I wasn’t allowed to be broken,
Nor have any prevailing faults;
I had to be perfect,
So I hide the flaws within.
These secrets could not
Be kept underneath the skin;
They needed to be revealed
To maintain my sanity.
