It’s disheartening how
a depression hits
so out of the blue,
catching you off-guard.
How one minute
you can be sublimely happy
and the next
be in the troughs of misery.
You could be on top
of the highest mountain peak,
then in the darkest pit,
the deepest ravine.
You can be on joy’s surface,
then be swimming
into the blue depths
away from the sunlight.
Sorrow has the ability
to drown all your hopes
as they sink into oblivion
into the sullen abyss.
Unlike its onset,
sadness takes some effort
to come out of,
each step- a struggle.
You need to drag yourself
out through the murkiness
and find the sun again,
the promise on the horizon.
