We’ve convinced ourselves
that our addictions-
because they are not
hazardous to our health or illegal-
are natural and justifiable.
But the very fact
that we allow them
to consume our thoughts
is cause for concern.
It’s one thing
if they are the result
of a nervous habit
or a retreat from stress.
However, once we let
them define us,
or rather change us
into obsessive people,
it is too late to turn back.
It’s impossible to
regain what’s been lost,
restore what’s been damaged,
return to what we were before.
