Housing Rejection

I was born
firmly planted
in concrete
until you shook
my foundation,
leaving cracks
in your wake.

You tested
my resilience,
finding it shaky;
walls once intact
collapsed around
the weight of
relapsed failure.

The hurricane winds
of rejection
shattered
windowed vision-
glassy clarity
now shuttered
and shut closed.

I began rebuilding
my structure,
from the outside in,
redesigning the
architecture of
my personality
to match your taste.

I added insulation
to the walls-
protection from hurt-
and plastered
on masks
to conceal
disregarded ideals.

How I hoped
the remodeling
would allow me
to finally be
able to meet
your stringent
building codes.

But I only ended up
looking like
every other house
in the neighborhood,
and I still was not
not acceptable
by your standards.
