but really acting like con artists,
get paid to convince patients they’re cured,
prescribing little empty capsules
as an excuse to charge more.
We drink up their diagnosis-
downing saline pills to keep from feeling down,
drowning our pain in sugar-flavored water.
I’m sorry to tell you- your own optimism and
faith in your ability to recover healed you,
not some mysterious, powdered medication.
Our minds and bodies have intuitive immunities.
When they sense something’s off balance,
they have a way of mending themselves.
Depression and pain are the mind and body’s way
of testing your defenses,
proving you’re equipped to ward off disease.
Don’t resort to false happiness and numbness;
they only camouflage the problem.
When the effects of the drug wear off,
you’re back at square one.
Hope is the natural cure,
and it doesn’t come in tablet form.
However, it will be harder to ingest
than any prescribed pill.
But, fortunately, you can’t overdose on it.
