A Cancerous Itch

Folder:
Extended Metaphors

It started with a tickle,

as fingers lightly touched,

finding crevices that had

never before been visited.

It felt uncomfortable at

first until digits grazed skin

in ways that brought relief.

A tickle led to a tingling

sensation on the underside

of epidermis layers where

fingernails parted flesh,

revealing a rash contained

therein, a swelling caused

by continuous scratching.

Now, it’s a cancerous itch;

a parasite resides under skin,

and it feeds on weakness.

Curiosity bred disease and

has spread across the body

occupying every opening,

consuming each nerve ending.

Rewrite 2012

It started with a tickle,
as fingers lightly fondled,
finding untouched crevices.

It felt uncomfortable at
first until digits grazed skin
in ways that brought relief.

A tickle led to tingling
on the underside of epidermis
where nails parted flesh.

A rash revealed therein,
a swelling caused
by continuous scratching.

Now, it’s a cancerous itch;
a parasite resides under skin,
and it feeds on weakness.

Curiosity bred disease and
has spread across the body
infecting everything.
