The surgical procedure
begins as they sterilize
and glove their hands
then inject you numb.
You were fast asleep
as they removed a part
of you that would
never be replaced.
They bandage what has
been hollowed-out,
stitch heart-shaped seams
over emptiness.
Recovery is an illusion;
health has not been restored.
You’ve only discovered
how to deal with the pain.
Heart is deadened to ache,
limbs paralyzed to suffering.
You only feel a vacancy
where your soul used to be.
