We are but birds
pecking aggressively and
fighting over stale bread.
Here, the most assertive
satisfies their hunger,
squawking at the others
to fly away and find
another hand
to feed them.
So, we move on
looking for more crumbs.
Once we spot
a new provider,
we coax them to
give us mere morsels
of their meals,
showing them our need
for nourishment.
Upon obtaining the crumbs,
we chew them up
into even smaller,
more digestible pieces,
afraid to choke on them
if we swallowed them
whole.
